Red Screes

Distance: 8 miles
Ascent: 700m
Weather: cold and clear

We began from High Sweden Bridge and along Scandale. The track was a little icy but there was less water than on Christmas Day,  the water level in the streams much lower and the crossings manageable, with some splashing.   Heading up the end of the valley we reached the snow line, through a muddy mix of bog and snow, then through snow. It was crunchy snowy ice at the top, and we didn't need to put our spikes on, but more layers of clothing were needed and still it was cold.

We sheltered behind a wall while we had lunch, just as we were preparing to set off again a fell runner arrived who was planning to meet some friends who were running up from the other side, it was not an ideal place to be hanging around in lycra shorts. He eventually gave up waiting and overtook us on his way down.

The descent was relatively gentle and with only a couple of slides we made it down to the grassy sheep fields.
